The Purnima that falls in the month of Vaishakh is celebrated as Vaishakh Purnima. As the name suggests, Vaishakha Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Vaishakh.

The full moon that falls in the month of Vaishakh is considered as Vaishakh Poornima. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu on the day of Vaishakh Purnima with full devotion and faith. By fasting, the devotees get happiness and prosperity.

Lord Buddha is considered the ninth incarnation of Vishnu. Those who had attained Buddhahood under the Modi tree at Bodh Gaya, the holy pilgrimage center of Bihar on this holy date. Therefore, this day is considered special. Vaishakh Purnima 2020 will be celebrated with great fanfare on 7 May 2020.

Importance of Vaishakh Purnima:

From Hindu Mythology, the very second month according to the Hindu calendar is known as Vaishakh month. Skanda Purana is one of the most religious Hindu scriptures which highlight the importance of this day. It is believed that devotees get blessed with abundance, rewards, and peace by worshipping Lord Vishnu on this particular day.

Devotees who take bath before the sunrise get freedom from all his sins and bad deeds. Vaishakh being the favorite of Lord Vishnu has become the most superior and auspicious month of the year.By observing a fast of Vaishakh Purnima, the devotees can attain prosperity and motcha.

Vaisakh Sankranti 2020:

Lunar months begin with Chaitra and solar months start with Vaisakha Sankranti. However, regional calendars mark when the official new year is celebrated. In regions such as Maharashtra which begin the official new year with the commencement of the lunar year, the solar year is marked by celebrating Vaisakha Sankranti. Conversely, regions starting the new year with Vaisakha Sankranti, give prominence to the start of the lunar year in Chaitra. In Vedic calendar, it is called Madhav, and in Vaishnav calendar, it is called Madhushudan month.

Offering Lord Vishnu ghee, sugar, til on this day is favourable. Perform homas with sugar and ghee. Taking bath in holy rivers like Ganga, Narmada etc provides freedom from all sins. Chant Om Namo Bhagvate Vasudevaya Namah while worshipping Lord Vishnu. Observing a fast dedicated to Satyanarayana brings luck and prosperity in the family.

The harvest festival of Vaisakhi is celebrated on in this month which marks the Punjabi new year according to the Punjabi calendar. Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on the Punjabi New year day.

Vaisakha Purnima is celebrated as Buddha Purnima or the birthday of Gautama Buddha amongst Buddhists of South and Southeast Asia, Tibet and Mongolia. Purnima refers to the Full Moon. Known in Sinhalese as Vesak, it is observed in the full moon of May.

Vaisakha sukla Panchami is celebrated as Adi Shankara birthday the great philosopher and theologian of Hinduism religion.

Vaishakha Purnima is known as “vaikasi vishakam” in Tamil Nadu which is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Murugan.

Vaisakha sukla chaturdasi is celebrated as Narasimha Jayanthi Festival in Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamivari Temple at Simhachalam.
