Riyaz Naikoo

Riyaz Naikoo, the Hizbul Mujahideen chief in Kashmir Valley, was killed by Indian security forces on 6 May 2020.He was categorized as A++ in the security force’s list of Top Militant Commanders in the Valley. He had involvement in several murder cases, including the murder of policemen.

The 35 year old former mathematics teacher carried a bounty of Rs 12 lakh on his head. In the Hizbul Mujahideen he very quickly rose to become the operational commander in chief.

Riyaz Naikoo has also released many videos and audios threatening informers and local policemen to stay away from his operations. He is reported to have significant support from Over Ground Workers (OGWs).

Riyaz Naikoo rose in the ranks of the Hizbul Mujahideen eight months after the killing of Burhan Wani. While the killing of Naikoo avenges the deaths of our security personnel, it also comes as a major relief for the security forces as he was a master at propaganda.

The killing was the major event in no less than three encounters that raged in southern Kashmir’s Pulwama district since Tuesday evening. Mobile internet services were snapped and the forces began enforcing curfew-like restrictions in almost the entire Kashmir Valley on Wednesday.

Naikoo began uploading photographs of militant recruits on social media, “welcomed the return of Pandits to Kashmir” and described Amarnath pilgrims as “guests”. He also began the practice of offering gun salutes to militants killed in gunbattles.
