Karachi: The residential building in Karachi’s Lyari area in Pakistan was collapsed on Sunday night. The residents of the building said the six-store structure collapsed with a loud sound.
Some of the residents are reportedly still under the rubble as fears of a rise in the number of those dead and injured continues.
Rescue workers used heavy machinery and were still removing the rubble, searching for more victims, according to police and the Edhi Foundation, which owns and runs Pakistan’s largest private ambulance service.
“The rescuers have so far recovered 19 bodies,” South Zone DIG Sharjeel Kharal confirmed to The News. “The search and rescue operation is still underway.”
The rescue operation was continuing for the third, during which bodies of 13 more people were pulled out from under the rubble. So far 19 bodies and six injured have been recovered from the debris.
The earlier reported death toll had stood at 13.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed regret over the loss of lives in the incident.
“I am with the affected families, we will not leave them alone in these difficult times,” Bilawal said.
This is the third major building collapse in the country’s financial capital this year. In March, 27 people were killed and scores injured when a five-storey building fell on two adjacent structures in the city’s congested Gulbahar area.
