International Sushi Day 2020

Sushi really has nothing to do with raw fish. It refers to the vinegar-seasoned rice used in making what we refer to as sushi.

There are SO many types of this dish that are generically (often wrongly) called “sushi”. Sashimi is simply slices of raw fish (often salmon or tuna). It is not served with the sushi rice. Nigiri is made from forming a handful of rice into a mound, and placing a piece of seafood over the top. Maki rolls are made from wrapping sushi rice and various fillings inside a seaweed wrapper.

International Sushi Day falls on 18 June. It was launched in 2009 to encourage consumers and food manufacturers around the world to try and enjoy sushi recipes. The original type of sushi was developed as a fish preservation method in Southeast Asia where it then spread to southern China before reaching Japan where it has gone on to become the sophisticated range of dishes enjoyed today.

History of the International Sushi Day

The sushi actually has an interesting history. One thing to point out is that it did not originate from Japan. But Japan should be given credit for popularizing this dish.

The history of this holiday is rather simple and it has nothing to do with some certain offline event held in Japan or anywhere else in the world. In 2009 a guy named Chis DeMay created a Facebook Fanpage of sushi, and that page immediately attracted many sushi fans around the world. DeMay decided to start International Sushi Day on June 18 tagging it with the statement “Every day should be Sushi day, but like anything that is this amazing, it deserves a day unto itself”.

Join all people around the world in celebration of International Sushi Day. You may go the local Japanese restaurant or make sushi at home. If you prefer the second variant, then here are several tips on how to make a perfect sushi roll:

  • work in gloves and keep them wet to prevent rice sticking to your fingers;
  • keep the shiny side of the seaweed away from you;
  • the perfect amount of rice for sushi is as much as you can roll into a ball with one hand.

What is the origin of the sushi?

The sushi started in south east Asia. It was a food developed from the practice of storing and preserving fish so that it can be consumed later. It was first called the Narezushi wherein fish wrapped in fermented and salted rice is stored so that it could remain for months thanks to the preserving abilities of salt and fermentation of rice. Originally, people eat this food by throwing the rice away and eating the fish alone.
