International Nurses Day 2020: May 12th 2020
International Nurses Day 2020 Theme: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health
International Nurses Day (IND) is an international day observed around the world on 12 May 2020 (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth) of each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society.
The theme for 2020, Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health, demonstrates how nurses are central to addressing a wide range of health challenges. It will encourage nurses and the public to celebrate the big day, but also provide information and resources that will help to raise the profile of the profession throughout the year and attract a new generation into the nursing family.
It is a day for us all to honour the tireless efforts of nurses, as they play pivotal roles in providing health care. From cradle to grave, nurses are unsung heroes who: welcome us to this world; take care of us when we are sick or injured; provide preventive and promotive health to keep us from falling ill, and; sadly, watch when patients they have nursed with much love pass away.
This requires a lot of hard work, and long hour shifts filled with physical, psychological and emotional stress. We acknowledge the invaluable contribution of nurses and midwives to our wellbeing by celebrating them on 12 May.
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965.
Every year International Nurses Day celebrated on May 12 around the world. The reason behind the 12th May date is the anniversary of Florence Nightingle’s birth. International Nurses day celebrated to mark the contributions of the Nurses to society. This day is celebrated by International council of Nurses (ICN) since 1965. Back in 1953 Dorothy Sutherland who was the official of US department of health, education and welfare proposed this Nurses Day celebration to president Dwight D. Eisenhower but he didn’t approved it.
In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses’ Day Kit.The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere.
As of 1998, 8 May was designated as annual National Student Nurses’ Day.
